The European Union (EU) has two certification systems. Olive oil with either of these certifications is likely to be genuine extra virgin olive oil. (Whether it tastes good or not is another story…)

About IGP and DOP

The European Union (EU) has two certification systems, IGP and DOP, to guarantee the quality and safety of these foods and to protect their producers.

In the photo below, you see a blue and yellow round symbol with the EU flag motif at the bottom of the label. This is called the IGP mark. IGP” is an abbreviation for the Italian term Indicazione Geografica Protetta, which translates to “Protected Geographical Indication.

The other system, “DOP,” is similar to the “IGP,” but with the words “Denominazione di Origine Protetta” (Protected Designated Denomination of Origin or Protected Denomination of Origin), DOP is a mark that certifies that the product is a specialty product of a smaller town or village, whereas IGP is a certification for a somewhat larger region such as a state.
